Precedence-Constrained Scheduling of Malleable Jobs with Preemption

چکیده
Scheduling jobs with precedence constraints on a set of identical machines to minimize the total processing time (makespan) is a fundamental problem in combinatorial optimization. In practical settings such as cloud computing, jobs are often malleable, i.e., can be processed on multiple machines simultaneously. The instantaneous processing rate of a job is a non-decreasing function of the number of machines assigned to it (we call it the processing function). Previous research has focused on practically relevant concave processing functions, which obey the law of diminishing utility and generalize the classical (non-malleable) problem. Our main result is a (2+ε)-approximation algorithm for concave processing functions (for any ε > 0), which is the best possible under complexity theoretic assumptions. The approximation ratio improves to (1+ ε) for the interesting and practically relevant special case of power functions, i.e., p j(z) = c j · zγ .

Towards Tight Lower Bounds for Scheduling Problems
We show a close connection between structural hardness for k-partite graphs and tight inapproximability results for scheduling problems with precedence constraints. Assuming a natural but nontrivial generalisation of the bipartite structural hardness result of [1], we obtain a hardness of 2 − for the problem of minimising the makespan for scheduling precedence-constrained jobs with preemption o...

متن کاملThe preemptive resource-constrained project scheduling problem subject to due dates and preemption penalties: An integer programming approach
Extensive research has been devoted to resource constrained project scheduling problem. However, little attention has been paid to problems where a certain time penalty must be incurred if activity preemption is allowed. In this paper, we consider the project scheduling problem of minimizing the total cost subject to resource constraints, earliness-tardiness penalties and preemption penalties, ...
متن کاملScheduling and Packing Malleable Tasks with Precedence Constraints of Bounded Width
We study two related problems in non-preemptive scheduling and packing of malleable tasks with precedence constraints to minimize the makespan. We distinguish the scheduling variant, in which we allow the free choice of processors, and the packing variant, in which a task must be assigned to a contiguous subset of processors. For precedence constraints of bounded width, we completely resolve th...
متن کاملSingle Machine Scheduling Problem with Precedence Constraints and Deteriorating Jobs
This paper considers the single machine scheduling problem with precedence constraints and deteriorating jobs. A mathematical model based on binary integer programming (BIP) is developed. By these precedence constraints, jobs can not start before completion of its all predecessors. The represented model is in two steps, in step one the earliest starting time of each job is computed, then the re...
